Over the past year, we have made some incredible strides in our filmmaking that simply would not have happened without a resource such as the Stellar Network.
For starters, we entered our screenplay FRIJOLITO, GO! in the first annual Stellar Network short script competition. The script took the grand prize. Along with the cash prize, we received validation from an industry professional, judge Steve Shainberg.
In addition, we received a staged reading of the script. Because of this, we were able to identify which aspects of the script were working and which weren't. It has proved invaluable to the script's evolution; FRIJOLITO, GO! subsequently won the grand prize in the Filmmakers.com short script competition.
So, a few months back, we decided to parlay this success into a short film. It was during this process that we realized how truly valuable the Stellar Network is for independent filmmakers. The elements that came to us through Stellar have proven invaluable.
We met our casting director through a posting in the Stellar Grapevine (one of the many perks of membership). At the subsequent Stellar Soirees, we were able to get to know him and develop a relationship that will hopefully be mutually beneficial for years to come.
Stellar also connected us with a director of photography, a post-production facility, and a seemingly endless source of like-minded filmmakers willing to volunteer their time and energy to helping us with our shoot. Simply put, this film would not get made without the resources provided by Stellar.
Like so many things, the Stellar Network is what you make of it, and we can say from experience that there's so much to be had. USE IT! We have been consistently amazed at the positive response to our calls for help, the support from individual members, and the willingness of Stellar's founders Hannah Minghella and Nicola Behrman to get their hands dirty themselves and help us out whenever possible.
We really are all in this together, and as we try to bring our projects to fruition, it's nice to know that the Stellar Network is there to use, as it was originally intended, to bring the New York independent film community together. Thanks, Stellar!
Sincerely,
Tony Mosher and Mitch Larson
